Engraving on aluminum components

Direct part laser marking is replacing mechanical "pin mark" marking techniques in several applications. The example provided shows a numeric string and an "omega" symbol to be engraved "as deep as possible" on a car engine aluminum part. The use of a 60W IR laser source equipped with a f=100mm lens provided a satisfactory clean and deep engraving while reducing the cycle time by 15% respect to the mechanical technique. In addition, laser marking offers simpler maintenance thanks to the contactless marking. There is conseguently no need to change broken pins or lubricate moving parts that are subject to wear.
